Context
The objective of this publication design project was to design two unique features belonging to the same magazine that utilized identical grid systems. Focusing on two vastly different stories, my goal for the design was to reflect the themes of each article in my typographic choices and page layouts.
Feature One
This feature, which discusses subjects from the 17th century, takes a classical approach to its design through the use of drop caps, larger outer and bottom margins, justified type, and symmetrical layouts. My selection of the decorative Roxton typeface was largely inspired by the essay’s fantastical subject of unicorns and classical fairy tale book covers.
Feature Two
This second feature, which mainly discusses the works of artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, takes inspiration from his rough and expressive artistic style which is conveyed through the use of a bold, condensed, mixed weight typeface on the cover spread. To create a cohesive visual theme throughout the feature, I further expressed his style through the use of a similar typestyle for pull quotes, as well as varying column heights of the body copy in a “random”, asymmetrical layout.
